*Study Abroad in the UK*
School of International Studies, College of Human and Social Sciences
I studied Politics at the University of Sheffield in the UK from August 2014 to June 2015. The modules, classes, were composed of lectures and seminars. Students were expected to discuss actively with each other during seminars. Lectures provided brief introductions to the themes of the seminars. In addition, students needed to read many materials before every seminar. However, at the beginning, I could not read a lot because I was not used to reading so much English. At the same time discussions were so fast that it was hard for me even to follow them. Throughout the two semesters I read a lot and tried to express my opinions during seminars. Finally I was able to read much faster and discuss with other students, I learned how to talk logically as well. During my study abroad programme, I also belonged to a touch rugby team and played with my mates every week. The University of Sheffield also emphasizes extracurricular activities and received the best university award by the Times Higher Education Student Experience Awards 2014-15.
(I visited Slovak parliament with the members of United Nations Association-University of Sheffield.)
I hope Kanazawa University will increase the ratio of international students. At the University of Sheffield, about 20% of all the students (approximately 5,000 students) are international students from 125 countries. I met many international students not only from Europe but also Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. I could compare and experience many cultures there. I hope Kanazawa University will accept more international students and enable Japanese students to experience different cultures on campus.
If you want to study abroad, I want to give one advice. I would recommend setting a goal. Why do you want to study abroad? What can you do to gain the best outcome through study abroad? What ability do you want to acquire? Answers to these questions will guide you when you get in trouble.
