I studied at Charles University in Czech Republic for 9 months from October, 2014. I belonged to the Faculty of Education and mainly learned about the education in Europe in English.

Before the departure from Japan, I was excited about college life abroad, but also worried about it because of my poor English. Actually, it brought a lot of difficulty in Czech life. I clearly remember the day when I took part in a hiking event soon after the arrival in Czech. I could not communicate well with others in the event, and I got deeply depressed. After that, I tried to regularly meet friends who want to learn Japanese and taught each other, and to join Language Exchange events.

In the university, I took small classes of about five students and had many opportunities to discuss with other students. It was so hard for me to actively participate in the classes in English. But the teachers said “English is not important.” They put an emphasis on the contents. For example, when I gave a presentation on Japanese education in a class called “Quality of Education,” the classmates and teachers were very interested in my presentation despite my poor English and I received a high evaluation.

Outside the campus, I visited 4 “Basic schools,” a combination of elementary and junior high school, by taking appointments by myself. I had chances to talk with teachers and observe classes. All of them welcomed me willingly. They guided me through the school and even brewed me a cup of coffee between classes.

There are not just language obstacles, but many kinds of “obstacles” during studying abroad. I think the “obstacles” are chances for growth. It doesn’t matter if you make a stop. As you overcome them, you will discover a new world. If you’re not satisfied with your current situation, please try to take a step forward with hopes for the world waiting on the other side of “obstacles.”
