From March 5 to 18, I joined a short-term study abroad program in Bangkok, Thailand. I was able to gain English conversation skill by attending English classes at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, interacting with Thai students, etc. In addition to that, I was able to deepen my knowledge of Thai culture through classes, activities and sightseeing. At first, I sometimes became frustrated in the environment where speaking English was required. However, thanks to my Buddies (Thai students who take care of us) who patiently listened to me, speaking English gradually became enjoyable.

After class or on weekends, I was able to enjoy the cultural differences through going to dinner and shopping with the Buddies and other Thai students. Thai people value their family and friends, and also they have room in their heart to take care of others, respond with a smile, etc., no matter how busy they are. I came to like the big-hearted and generous Thai people more and it made me want to know and understand more about the Thai culture. To become a fan of the country and its people through local life and interacting with the locals is the starting point of cross-cultural understanding.

Since the program only lasts for two weeks, always ask yourself “why did you decided to participate” and “what kind of person you would like to be when this is over “, and enjoy every day actively.
