*Study Abroad First Step Program in New Zealand*
School of Teacher Education, College of Human and Social Sciences
I joined “First Step Program in New Zealand” in this summer. In this report, I would like to tell you about my three weeks stay in New Zealand.
In the University of Waikato, I took classes with about 20 students. In the class, there were students of various nationalities and ages. Our class spend a lot of time to learn English conversation though games or discussions. While talking with them, I could learn some cultures, habits and the way of thinking. It was a very meaningful time for me. In addition, the facilities of the university were also substantial, for example, there were gym, cafe, pharmacy, sushi shop and so on. The sushi there was very delicious, so please try it!
The point of this program is not only classes, but also activities after school or weekends. In the weekend, I joined some tours organized by the university and visited sightseeing sites in New Zealand. After school, I enjoyed shopping and playing badminton with my friends who were from China and Taiwan. New Zealand has Westerners, Asians, Africans and many other nationalities, also they respect for Maori who are indigenous people of New Zealand. When I was just walking around the city, I could feel various cultures. It was such a special country.
In addition, home stay was a precious experience to me. They treated me not only as a guest but also as a member of the family. At first, I was confused with the difference in lifestyle, but thanks to their generosity and kindness, I could spend in a relaxed manner. I cannot thank them enough.
Finally, I would like to point that what you can gain by study abroad experience is so great. It brought me new worldview and many encounters. Actually, I still keep in touch with friends I made in New Zealand through Instagram and I feel this study abroad widened my job choice. If you are worried about going to study abroad, I would say you should go! Although it is just three weeks, this experience will change your sense of value and thoughts. Try things rather than worrying about it!
I am happy if my experience can be a little boost for people who are considering going study abroad in the future.
